"In particular one
photo has affected me, it's of my younger brother and a Samberigi
child. The disparity between the two children and insensitivity to
the poorer is palpable. Still the photo was composed, taken and then
shown to "the supporters" back "home" in
Australia to demonstrate in part the nature of the work that needed
doing. As children we shared a name with other missionary's children
that translates into english as, son of the white man. The name puts
it clealry, as a child I was a tangible element in the hegemonic rise
of western culture in the regions I grew up in, this was both by my
mere presence there and in the role my parents placed me in.
